VOWS: A New Beginning
Monday, February 13, 2012
Sunday, January 1, 2012 not only ushered in a new year, but signalled the beginning of a new life for Denniesa Jullaine Hinds, director of strategic monitoring and evaluation in the Ministry of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, and Howard Wayne Johnson Jr, broker at Johnson Benjamin and Associates Limited and president of the Realtors Association of Jamaica.
How They Met...
Though their paths had crossed on a number of occasions and the two were connected via social media, it was not until late 2009 that Howard decided to make contact with Denniesa after seeing her across the room from him at a gospel concert. And this he did, once again through social media. It would take a few more of these Internet contacts before they actually started dating. Sparks flew as the couple realised just how much they had in common. They became inseparable, and Howard soon realised it was time for him to close the deal. Denniesa’s parents were consulted, his proposal was accepted, and a wedding was planned for the following month.
Here Comes The Bride...
The ceremony took place on the golf course of the Jewel Dunn's River Beach Resort and Spa in Mammee Bay, St Ann — the exact location where Howard had popped the question. The bride wore a stunning Mori Lee gown complemented by a birdcage veil embellished with Swarovski crystals, and made her way up the aisle clutching a gorgeous bouquet of red roses and calla lilies. Her hair was styled in a chignon created by Carolene Dennis of Cutting Edge beauty salon, and her Paul March-applied make-up. Dennis and March provided the same services for the bridesmaids — Kadi-Ann Hinds, sister of the bride and maid of honour; Alecia Burgess, Jossett Francis and Chrishel Williams — who were outfitted in claret dresses by Mori Lee. The bridegroom and his groomsmen — Darry Davis, Everton Barnes and Howard Bailey — were nattily attired in black suits with red accents by Dexter Huxtable of Spokes Apparel. The bridesmaids deviated from traditional bouquets, carrying instead black and white clutches which had red roses attached to them. The best men, Marlon Evans and Floyd Davis, carried iPads up the aisle which assisted in the execution of their Mission Impossibleinspired entrance.
The ceremony was officiated by Eric Nathan, family life director of the Jamaica Union of Seventh-day Adventists, Reverend Sedley Johnson, the groom's uncle, and Samuel Lewis, pastor of the Andrews Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church; with readings from the bride’s uncle Richard ‘Richie B’ Burgess and Donna Johnson-Scott, cousin of the groom. The couple opted for a letter ceremony in which they exchanged sealed love letters — the letters will be opened and read on the couple’s first wedding anniversary.
The Reception:
The reception was held in “The Bling Room” of the hotel which was styled with damask table overlays and red roses, courtesy of Jennivie Wisdom and her team from Tai Flora Luxe, Ocho Rios. A life-sized portrait of the couple was placed beside the signing table at the entrance to the reception area.
What They Ate...
An authentic Jamaican menu was served with quirky terms such as 'Set Up Yuhself' (the appetiser) and 'Nourish Yuhself' (salad). Musical styling came from Djenne Greaves and the G-Klef band who were accompanied by vocalists Diamara Neil, Euphony and Darry Davis. Master of Ceremonies Alric Blake handled the formalities with aplomb.
The newlyweds enjoyed a five-day cruise throughout the Western Caribbean.
