A golden wedding anniversary
Monday, March 15, 2010
MELBOURNE and Joyce (nee Taylor) Crooks were married on December 12, 1959 at Assembly Hall (Christian Brethren denomination) on Orange Street, Kingston. They met at a Billy Graham Crusade special meeting in Jamaica in 1959 and within a year, love blossomed into a great friendship and marriage.
The couple -- parents of four -- celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 3, with family and friends.
"A marriage is like driving a motorcar -- after 50 years you look in the rear-view mirror and a mental picture is painted in your mind where you move from a vision to a dream and cherished ambitions," Melbourne said.
"The grace of God kept us together for so long because it is by God's grace that we are on this earth."
Joyce shared similar sentiments, adding that communication, tolerance and respect for each other's views are key elements in a good marriage and a happy home.
"You must have tolerance, patience and love for the marriage to succeed," she said.
There was a celebratory service of commitment of marriage at the anniversary celebrations.
All members of their family, including children Ruth, Douglas, Joy and Raymond were present at the private family brunch.
The couple is retired and Mrs Crooks enjoys rearing birds, gardening and church activities.
Mr Crooks still works part-time in the building and construction industry. He enjoys reading, church activities and walking. He walks every morning.
