WHAT do you do when you get in an accident? What information should you get from the other party? Should you report it regardless of how minor the accident is? It is important for all car owners to be prepared for things like this, especially for those of you who are new on the road. A lot of people tend to ignore this reality that accidents will happen, but good driver or not, the chances are high that you'll be involved in at least one accident in your driving lifetime. Here is a basic checklist to follow to ensure that you are prepared if and when this happens.
1. Keep calm. After an accident you will feel a wide range of emotions -- shock, guilt, fear, nervousness, anger -- all of which are normal. But take a few deep breaths or count to 10 to calm down. The calmer you are, the better prepared you will be to handle the situation. This is the time to take stock of the accident and try to make a judgement about whether it was a serious one.
2. Have a disposable camera handy. You need one! After your accident, have your camera ready to take shots. Persons tend to be very dishonest and unreasonable here, so have your camera on hand to take pictures of the damage, and in the case where the party was at fault, ensure to take pics of where they hit you, positions of the car etc.
3. Have your documents ready. Have your registration and insurance information ready. Copies of these should be well in your glove compartment. Exchange names, addresses, license and insurance information with the driver of the other car. Review your policy to make sure of your coverage.
4. Report it. You have two parties to which you should report to in accidents where you hope to seek damages. These are the police and your insurance company. Make the relevant reports so that your claim can be settled speedily.
Remember, accidents happen, just be prepared and take full control of the situation.
