Jamaican-born Verna Royes, 97, is animated as she talks with recipients of the Stanley and Verna Royes Scholarship last Tuesday. Listening in are Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Professor Gordon Shirley (right) and Campus Registrar Camille Bell-Hutchinson (second right). The occasion was an appreciation ceremony held last Tuesday at the Mona Visitor's Lodge and Conference Centre to applaud Royes and her husband's generosity. Royes donated US$50,000 to the institution, a sum which has provided 16 students with scholarships to attend UWI in the 2012/13 academic year. (Photo: Aston)
