Norma's Spirit Lives On
FOODIE NEWS
Thursday, November 24, 2011
For the many friends who gathered on Dian Watson's verandah on Friday, October 21, Norma's spirit was very much alive. In a space shared with Norma on innumerable occasions over the last few years, it was hard not to miss her rambunctious and infectious spirit, not to hear her outrageous laugh. The occasion was the Jamaican launch and signing of Dorel Callender's cook book, A Caribbean Mom's Table, a work encouraged by Norma. The lively evening was worthy of Norma's spirit.
Dorel Hay Callender retired after a distinguished career as an international civil servant. Her husband Victor had a long career at the IMF and died a decade ago shortly after his retirement. The book of recipes of traditional Caribbean dishes, updated for modern living, is a tribute to Victor Callender and to the late Norma Shirley, who has not been replaced as Queen of Caribbean Cuisine.
Friends of Norma Shirley, who have established a scholarship in her name, took advantage of the occasion to make the award to the first scholarship winner 19-year-old Tena Harrison. Tena is pursuing a four-year degree in Food Management at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech).
Part proceeds from the sale of the books on Friday were donated to the scholarship fund, and the young winner was able to express her appreciation for the support.
Culinary doyenne Norma Shirley died on November 2, 2010 at the University Hospital of the West Indies after a brief illness.
