Q: My boss has once again asked me to prepare the guest list the for the company’s annual cocktail reception and has reminded me to ensure that the word ‘Non-transferable’ is included on each invite. I am, however, concerned that persons who are not on the list will turn up (as they did last year) and I’ll not know what to do.

A: An invite that includes the word: ‘Non-transferable’ means that the name on the invite is the person expected at the event. If the invitee is unable to attend, he/she MUST NOT give the invitation to anyone else without the express permission of the host. This can cause major embarrassment as the host would be perfectly in his/her right to bar access.
