SOS Etiquette - November 3

Q: Dear SOS, I was at a function last week Tuesday evening and as a result of one greedy individual at our table set for eight persons I was deprived of my dinner roll. Fact is, I don't really need the extra calories but was I wrong to make a bit of a fuss about it?
A: Whether dining in or at someone else's home it's usually one dinner roll per person. If placed you will find your dinner roll to your left (your watch hand). If the rolls are in a basket or on a plate, each guest is obliged to take one. You mention that you were seated at a table set for eight persons. The banquet staff, when placing the rolls, do take this into consideration and would have allotted one per table setting. If a dinner guest chooses to display boorish behaviour by taking more than one, ignore said individual. Never make a scene publicly or privately over food. Nod and smile.
