Spicy chutneys

SHELF TALK

Thursday, January 05, 2012

As preparations for hosting duties kicked into high gear for the just-concluded festive holidays, we came across two flavourful condiments while browsing supermarket shelves. The Eaton's West Indian Papaya and Mango chutneys, conveniently packaged and ready to eat, added some spice to the many round-table conversations during the holiday break. The spicy pastes are distributed by Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited (CPJ), which acquired the full distribution rights for the Eaton's brand of seasonings and condiments in 2008.

CPJ Brand Manager Marvin Campbell boasted to Thursday Food: "The natural blend of fruits, herbs and spices is the reason Eaton's chutneys are so delicious. Each condiment brings out the true taste of Jamaica and the Caribbean." The papaya chutney includes a blend of Jamaican papayas, Jamaican ginger, onions, hot peppers, garlic and spices among its ingredients, while the mango chutney comprises Jamaican mangoes, sugar, Jamaican ginger, onions, hot peppers, garlic and spices. Each product retails for $150, while a case of 24 fetches a cost of $4,074. The condiments, in addition to other Eaton's products such as Jerk Seasonings, Hot Sauces, BBQ Sauces and Jams, may be purchased at: John R Wong Supermarket, New Kingston; Shopper's Fair, May Pen; Hi-Lo, Spanish Town; Loshusan Supermarket, Barbican; and Max Value Supermarket, Santa Cruz.
