Beres Hammond

Christopher James' Zulu Chant rhythm looks hit bound

Back in 2000 you heard two of his biggest beats, the Tixx and the Blaze rhythms. He later followed up with the Engine, Robbery and then punched the cash register with Dollar Sign. Producer Christopher James, son of veteran producer Lloyd 'King Jammy's' James Sr, is back with another project, which he aptly titles the Zulu Chant.

Zulu Chant is one of the very few rhythms, which utilises live instruments.

"I wanted a different feel with this project", James told the Vibe in a recent interview.

Sean Paul

Musician 'Wrong Move' utilises drums and guitar riffs, which reinforce the African vibe to the rhythm. Zulu Chant isn't your regular dancehall beat, but from what I heard so far, this rhythm should do well once it is given ample air time and promotional muscle.

The contributions on the rhythm vary, and the variety makes it an interesting listen. I particularly love the track Cry by singer Daville. This is the best song on the rhythm, hands down!

Sizzla's Children of Today, Warrior King's thought provoking Friend Indeed, Anthony B's pleading Ghetto Boy, Kymani Marley's Live the Life, Anthony Malvo's Mama's Prayer, Cry of the Poor by Turbulence, and Wayne Marshall's I Love the Way are commendable efforts.

Ward 21's Something About Her is another track meriting a few spins, so too Conrad Junior's Reside to the Mountain, Norris Man's Bigger Heads and A Girl From Ghana by Anthony Cruz.

Sasha

Now, its over to local radio to give this beat the justice it deserves!

Beres Hammond scores 14th hit on New York Reggae Chart

Veteran lovers' rock crooner Beres Hammond has scored his 14th #1 hit on the New York Reggae chart in the form of Much Clearer, which has been released on the Jobe's Hill label.

According to chart compiler, Clinton Lindsay, Hammond registered his first number one on the New York Reggae chart in 1984, when Stuck on You on the J&W label spent six weeks in the top spot.

Since then, Hammond has hit the charts almost every year. His number one chart toppers on the New York listing are Groovy Little Thing, What One Dance Can Do, She Loves Me Now, Tempted to Touch, Love Mi Haffie Get (with Cutty Ranks), Double Trouble, Who Say (with Buju Banton), Can You Play Some More, Pull it Up, They Gonna Talk, Rock Away and last year's Come Down Father.

Incidentally, Come Down Father spent five weeks at number one and ties with his current chart champion Much Clearer, which is currently spending its fifth week in the number spot.

Sexy Lady rhythm heating-up the airwaves

By now you must have heard the Big Yard production, Sexy Lady rhythm. If you don't know what it is, it is actually the rhythm, which accompanies the dancehall re-mix of Shaggy's Hey Sexy Lady hit song.

Produced by Christopher Birch for Lang Mann Productions/Big Yard, the rhythm has been creating a huge buzz on local airwaves and in the clubs, ever since it was unleashed late last year.

Commercially, a few of the songs on the beat were released, but now most have hit the record shops and so far, the re-mix of Hey Sexy Lady (featuring Sean Paul, Brian and Tony Gold and rapper Will Smith) as well as Wayne Marshall's waist grinding Marshall Town, Tanto Metro and Devonte's Hey Girl, Rik Rok's Shake It, TOK's She's Hot, and What's Up Papi by Danny English and newcomer Tia, seem to be attracting attention.

Chart wise Hey Sexy Lady leads the pack as it topped the New York Reggae charts in December. It is also doing well on local charts.

Snow, Sean Paul and Playboy bunnies for Sprung 2003 in Negril

Negril will no doubt be buzzing tomorrow as Sprung 2003 is scheduled to take place at the Waves Entertainment complex on the Norman Manley Highway, Negril.

The event has attracted major North American media coverage (MTV, E! TV, BET and Travel Channel), will feature performances from the high riding Sean Paul as well as Canadian-based Reggae toaster, Snow.

Sean Paul is currently riding the Billboard charts with his Get Busy single and his recently certified gold album, Dutty Rock.

Snow, best known for the hits Informer, Anything For You and Girl I Been Hurt, recently released a new album for Virgin/EMI in Canada. He is nominated in the Reggae category of the 2003 JUNO Awards (Canada's equivalent to the Grammy).

Playboy Bunnies as well as the Baby Blue Sound Crew from Canada are added attractions for this Spring Break event.

Rude Girls of Dancehall hit New York on Friday

Dubie's Palace in New York will come alive this Friday, as four leading ladies of the dancehall as well as a prolific dancehall dancer, will take centre-stage, and doing what they do best, entertain.

The four female recording artistes are Sasha (whose combination with Sean Paul I'm Still in Love With You Boy topped the New York Reggae charts last year); Lady Saw, CeCile, and Tanya Stephens (whose latest hits What a Day and What's Your Story are currently riding the charts).

The lone dancer on the lineup, former dancehall queen, Stacey, will no doubt leave patrons in awe with her dancing prowess. She has been making a name for herself in local and international dancehall circles over the past three years.

The Afrique sound system as well as Next Level will take care of the musical juggling. Green Eyes Production is promoting the event.

THE LIVE WIRE

Why does the doctor think its cool to disrespect a CVM-TV cameraman? If it weren't for the media, some of these deejays wouldn't be where they are today.

So the manager of a hot deejay who received some licks in St Elizabeth from an alleged member of the security force, is planning on taking legal action?

Why is an album being launched almost six months after it was first released? And, if truth be told, that album is not among the best for 2002.

Producers, who contributed to the golden child's rocking album, must be waiting with baited breath to see if it will go platinum. Only time will tell. Going to the bank??

Did you hear about the radio personality who was overheard making love on the telephone? No silly, it's no rumour, actually excerpts of the love making came out accidentally on the airwaves.

Big movie to be shot on 'pon di corner' in Kingston in June. A number of deejays we understand are lining up to audition for roles. But what a headache when they hear who has been selected so far for a major role.

A member of No Doubt says the group won't be recording with any more Jamaican acts. I guess once bitten twice shy!

The Isley Brothers and Johnny Gill will be buzzing on Mothers' Day.

Question of the week. In with Jamaican Idol and out with Tastee Talent Contest?

Singer Christopher, who rocked the New York Reggae charts last year with his cover of Whose Holding Donna Now, and who was once being managed by Mo Music's Louis 'Flabba' Malcolm, has now signed with the Stampede Conglomerate entity. The signing took place last week in New Kingston.

That's it for this week. Now you are officially in tune to the VIBE!
