MARLON ROYE - HEAD BOY OF BRIDGEPORT
Working to achieve with the help of God
TANEISHA DAVIDSON
Tuesday, March 16, 2004

Sixteen year-old Marlon Roye says he is proud of the response he has gotten from his schoolmates as the head boy of Bridgeport High School, even though he finds it tough sometimes when he has to punish his fellow students.

He says his favourite subject is Math because of the challenge it presents with every equation he has to solve.
"Math is complicated and I like a challenge," he said.

The headboy says he works better under pressure and he handles pressure by relaxing. It's better if you relax," he advised.

Describing himself as a self-motivator, Marlon says he also looks to the creator for inspiration.

"I look upon myself as a great individual and it all has to do with loving yourself," he said.

Martin Luther King is another role model for Marlon; he says he looks up to King because of the sacrifices he made. "He sacrificed his family," Marlon added.

Marlon studies by using study cards and exchanging the notes he made with his classmates. "I write the information on study cards and then exchange them with my friends," he explained.

However, he admitted that studying can be frustrating at times. He also said that his schoolwork has improved significantly since grade 7.

Marlon's philosophy is: "only the best is good enough and if you desire to be great then you will obtain success," he said, as he explained that this motivates him to aim high.

The future electrical engineer says he chooses this particular career because it gives him a sense of pride. "It gives me the feeling of importance and I like doing it," he said, adding that he will be sitting six CXC subjects this year, including Physics.

As a Christian, Marlon says, his faith helps him to be dedicated to his schoolwork. "The peace of God helps you with dedication," he noted.

His advice to his fellow students is to take things one day at a time and avoid frustration.

When he is not at school, Marlon says he spend his time relaxing, meditating and listening to music.

He says that the students don't really understand him and so he is considered by them to be anti-social.

The head boy also considers himself to be a leader and so he finds it hard to succumb to peer pressure.
