Gregg posts new lap record

KYLE Gregg rewrote the history books by setting a new lap record of 1:24:924 seconds in the front-wheel drive Modified Production class two (MP2) at the Dover Raceway in St Andrew on Sunday.
"I broke it properly this time," said Gregg, a member of the Total Summerbell Racing trio which comprises David Summerbell Jr and Andre Anderson. The previous lap record was 1:25:141 seconds which he also held.
The record-breaking performance came during a qualifying session as Gregg tried to capture pole position from his perennial rival, Alan Chen.
"The car was perfect. We were running a new setup and as soon as I finished I could feel that we'd just done something special. I'm also happy that we're finally out-qualifying Alan. Normally I'd have to rely on race pace to get around him. Now I'm starting races in front," he told Auto.
To Gregg, the new record reflects a massive team effort on maximising his Honda Civic to the MP2.
"The car can go faster. We can lighten the car further," said Gregg. "With Alan [Chen] still pushing, I just want to keep my championship lead."
Gregg was overall driver's champion for 2011.
His class rival Chen admitted that Gregg had the more powerful machine.
"There's no question that Gregg's car is fast. There's not much I can do. I don't think I can close the gap between us right now," said Chen.
