No proper venues

SENIOR members of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) have renewed their call for a suitable entertainment facility in Jamaica.

Acting chairman Fae Ellington and acting executive director Delroy Gordon -- who has been with the JCDC for over 20 years -- lamented the absence of a modern complex to hold major cultural events at the Jamaica Observer's Monday Exchange held at the newspaper's Beechwood Avenue headquarters.

"There is always a challenge with performing space. In fact, if you ask me what is our greatest challenge as a cultural development agency or entity, I'd tell you that it is the lack of performing space," said Gordon.

Ellington agreed, saying the campaign for a proper entertainment space was not new. She said while she was chairman of the Entertainment Advisory Board, there was great urgency to have the matter addressed.

"I'm sitting here feeling extremely 'impotent' because there are so many things that come into play not the least among them how to finance this need," Ellington said.

She said each of the three counties should have properly designed entertainment spaces.

"It should be properly structured with all the sound and lighting capacity, the seating arrangement, hydraulic stage," Ellington said, adding that Government cannot achieve this alone.

"Corporate Jamaica needs to come on board and they need to understand that until and unless they help by putting some of their money there, we will continue to have other social issues.

At a Monday Exchange in February members of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) also highlighted the absence of a national venue.
