Tessanne to headline Shaggy and FriendsThursday, December 19, 2013
TESSANNE Chin will be the headliner for charity show, Shaggy and Friends, set for the lawn of Jamaica House on January 4.
It will be the singer's first local performance since winning the NBC talent competition, The Voice, on Tuesday night.
Diamond-selling reggae act Shaggy made the announcement at the charity show's launch held at the Bustamante Hospital for Children in St Andrew, yesterday. Proceeds from the event will go towards the 50-year-old facility's cardiac wing which currently under construction and scheduled to open in February.
Shaggy said he encouraged Chin to try out for the American TV talent show as a means of boosting her career internationally.
"I had first hand experience and, therefore, knew what was required for someone to go all the way on The Voice and just knew Tessanne was the full package. She has that great personality plus she can sing like hell. I was confident it would work for all concerned," he said.
The Mr Boombastic singer said he watched Tuesday's final from both Usain Bolt's Tracks and Records and then moved to Half-Way-Tree to have that experience.
"It was incredible ... I was just as excited as everyone else and I can't wait for her homecoming."
Are there any other Jamaican singers that could make it on The Voice?
"It would take sitting down with that person and really getting to know them and see if they have the talent and personality required to grab the attention ... that X-factor. It all takes a while to decide, it's not an overnight thing," Shaggy said.
In addition to Chin, the show's line-up includes American pop act Ne-Yo, Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley, Konshens, Chronixx, Tarrus Riley, Assassin, I-Octane, Wayne Marshall and Pinchers.
Shaggy promised a surprise act.
The event, which was first staged in 2009, has raised in excess of US$1million to purchase much-needed equipment for the country's lone paediatric hospital.
