Anancy nonsense

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

Dear Editor,

I agree with the letter by Yannick Pessoa, "Has Anancy really affected us", on July 26, 2012. Why is it that African heritage should be associated with demons and other nonsense? These comparisons make one wonder what is really happening to our African people.

Marcus Garvey must be turning in his grave at these mediocre ideologies! It seems as if Dionne Dennis, who wrote the July 24 letter, “Tear down the spirit of ‘Anancyism’” is forgetting old Marcus Garvey. He left us messages that taught us to appreciate our roots, history, past and culture. I think that she needs to read and listen to the works of Marcus Garvey. Her thoughts are reminiscent of the colonial masters who constantly told us that we are ugly, barbaric and our hair is too coarse. It seems Ms Dennis fails to understand that Africans started civilisation, engineering, science and even religion which baffles modern-day scientists.

I am proud to be of African descent. I close this letter with a quote from Marcus Garvey: "I do not have to apologise to anybody for being black. God Almighty knows what he was doing when he made me black.”
