Fine example by Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago

Dear Editor,

The Caribbean Community is overjoyed at the stupendous display by the Jamaican men’s 4 x 100m relay team in winning the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and becoming the first team to run the event in under 37 seconds.

Their victory crowned a successful series of performances by the Jamaican sprinters at the Games and allowed Usain Bolt to capture his third gold medal of the Olympics for the second consecutive time. He and his teammates Yohan Blake, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter have set a new standard for world sprinting while creating history.

In placing third, the Trinidad and Tobago squad of Keston Bledman, Marc Burns, Emmanuel Callendar and Richard Thompson did their country proud and allowed the region to have two medalwinning teams in this event for the second Olympics in succession.

These young men have demonstrated the commitment and dedication necessary to achieve consistently high levels of performance in the global arena. This is a fine example of what the Caribbean youth could achieve by adopting these same values.

The Community joins with the Government and People of Jamaica in celebrating this historic achievement which undoubtedly cements this generation of sprinters as the best in the world.
