Good job, National BEST, Digicel

Monday, July 30, 2012

Dear Editor,

As we review who and what helped Jamaica's positive progress over the past half century, let's not forget some great things going on right now.

For example, I want to congratulate the National BEST Community Foundation for its islandwide competition and programme. This is a

far-reaching, year-round initiative, encouraging and supporting community development through a host of practical, empowering project categories.

Wonderful programmes like this would never leave the drawing board without funding - and one of Jamaica's most outstanding corporate citizens is Digicel. The Digicel Foundation is a major sponsor of the National BEST Community Competition and Programme (NBCCP) - to the tune of $10 million annually for the last four years, and $15 million this year.

Communities compete in areas ranging from beautification to environmental programmes, from disaster preparedness to health, from socio-economic activities to heritage, culture, youth development and education, among others.

This fosters self-help and self-reliance, not to mention community spirit and pride, as well as tangible improvements in the quality of community life.

The NBCCP empowers Jamaicans in every parish, with the main focus on small rural communities with few resources and many challenges.

The generous cash prizes are used by the communities to enhance even more improvements - maximising the benefits.

Good job, National BEST Community Foundation! Good job, Digicel!

I think we can look forward to making the next 50 years even better for Jamaica.
