Re-enact Independence Parliament

Monday, July 30, 2012

Dear Editor,

On August 6, we should re-enact the opening of the Independence Parliament at the National Arena. The original MPs could be represented by their descendants, relatives or any person indicated by the respective parties.

The JLP would decide on the representative for Sir Alexander Bustamante; Derrick Sangster could represent Sir Donald; Tom Tavares-Finson, Clem Tavares; Arthur Williams his dad, and Wykeham McNeill, his uncle Roy. Edward Seaga is still with us.

The PNP would decide who would represent the two Manleys; Vernon Arnett could be represented by his son; Sara Lou could stand in for Sir Florizel, and so on.

Each representative would make a five-minute presentation on the particular MP, and during this time the photo of the real person would be flashed on screen. The newspapers could up to August 6 carry photos and biographies of the men and women who served.

There could also be flashbacks to the memorable persons who served before there was a Gordon House. People like "Slave Boy" Evans, "Crab" Nethersole and Rose Leon. Celebration has to be more than sporting and jumping up. I am sure that with his wealth of information and little personal insights, political analyst Troy Caine would make himself available to any group making arrangements.
