Right on, Observer, Digicel is within its rights

Dear Editor,

In response to Mark Wignall's Jamaica Observer column of August 16, I applaud the clarification published last Friday as a follow-up by your newspaper, pointing out that Digicel has been perfectly within its rights to select a CEO from those it considers the best people to lead its company.

Obviously, they respect their Jamaican managers who have always, and continue to be selected to serve in important leadership positions by Digicel, including serving as board members - positions in fact senior to that of CEO. In addition, as your clarification points out, Digicel continues to appoint Jamaicans as CEOs in other countries across the Caribbean and in the South Pacific.

I would like to suggest that the column's criticism is unduly harsh. Jamaica has benefited from Digicel's policy to give back to the communities they serve through their foundation. They have far outpaced others in this respect.

Not to mention, as you also point out, that if we as Jamaicans want to be realistic members of a global society, we need to realise that just as our people can hold important posts in other countries, the converse must also apply.

Yours in sincere appreciation of positive corporate citizens such as Digicel.
