VIDEO: Cops ready to police Ja 50 celebrations

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police today have signalled their readiness to monitor Jamaica 50 events scheduled for various venues across the island.

Speaking at a press conference today at the Police Commissioner's office at Hope Road in Kingston, senior Superintendent Assan Thompson, who is assigned to the Operations Portfolio, said that the cops had conducted a feasibility study and had developed a strategy to effectively police the events.

"We started a process of sensitisation where members were educated about the celebrations and its importance. We followed on by making a critical assessment of the security environment to understand the threats and risks we may encounter," Thompson said.

He added the Jubilee Village, which will be housed at the National Stadium complex, would be thoroughly policed and while members of the constabulary have been urged to exercise restraint, law and order would be maintained.

"The venue will be thoroughly searched on a daily basis using our clear, hold and deliver strategy. Persons entering the venue will be searched for prohibited and restricted items such as firearms, knifes, firecrackers, glass bottles, ice picks or any other object or items which can cause harm or injuries," Thompson said.
