Alia is ready!

Monday, July 30, 2012

LONDON, England - Alia Atkinson is ready for tonight's final of the Olympic women’s 100m breaststroke final says Martin Lyn, president of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) and managers of the Jamaican swim team at the London Olympic Games.

Lyn told the Jamaica Observer earlier today that Atkinson who survived a swim-off last night after tying with Canadian Tera Van Beilen for fourth in the first semi-final and the eighth and final position overall was "doing fine."

The ASAJ boss said the swim off was “in hind sight a good thing for Alia …this was a wakeup call for Alia as she now realise this is the Olympic Games and it had to take something special from her.”

Lyn said the swimmer “trained well this morning, had an ice bath and had her nap and is relaxed and ready to go.”

After winning her first round heat in 1 minute 07.48 seconds, to join Sion Brinn as the only Jamaicans to win an Olympic Games swimming heat, the 23-year-old Atkinson, then clocked 1 minute 07.48 in the afternoon's semi-final, the same time as the 19-year-old Canadian forcing the tie breaker third swim.

Atkinson responded with her best swim ever, lowering her National Record to 1 minute 06.79 seconds with the Canadian struggling home in 1 minute 07.73 seconds.

Lyn told the JamaicaObserver today the third swim also served as a "mental breakthrough' as she realised she can go even faster.

The final will start at 8:13pm UK time of 2:13pm Jamaican time.
