Community league organiser appeals for help

BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter MONTEGO BAY, St James

Paul Nelson, the organiser of the annual All Community Summer Football League has called on the Montego Bay business community to provide sponsorship for the competition which got underway in St James recently.

At the same time, Nelson who is a Red Cap porter at the Sangster International Airport, and who has shouldered most of the sponsorship for the competition over the past 21 years, has lauded businessman Mark Hart for providing much needed support to the league.

Nelson told the Observer West that the competition was initiated just over two decades ago in an effort to keep the youths in St James active during the holiday season.

"It is also intended to lure them from the temptation of getting involved in criminal activities," he added.

Meanwhile, the competition will enter its second round of matches on Sunday with a triple header.

In the first game defending champions Moy Hall go up against West Bank from King Gate; Little Miami out of Catherine Hall do battle with Unity Hall; and New Ramble will tackle Salt Spring United.

The finals will be played on August 26 after which the winners will be presented with a $50,000 cash prize along with the championship trophy; while the beaten finalist will pocket $20,000 along with a trophy.

The eight top teams will be presented with a football each.
