Spot Valley's Brown, Gordon take MVP awards in KFC U-14 basketball

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jhamonique Brown and Loretta Gordon, both of Spot Valley High were recently named the Most Valuable Players (MVP) for the ISSA/KFC Western Conference Boys Under 14 and Girls Open basketball competitions respectively.

In the awards ceremony held after Spot Valley upset favourites and previously unbeaten Herbert Morrison Technical by one point in the Under 14 finals, both players were recognised for their contributions to their teams throughout the season.

Ironically, the Spot Valley girls team were beaten by a point by underdogs William Knibb Memorial in their final a week earlier.

Meanwhile, Brown who scored a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds along with four blocked shots in the recent finals to lead Spot Valley to their 29-28 victory, picked up three awards.

He was also named top scorer and top free throw shooter while Devonte Myles of Herbert Morrison and Muschett's Damaine Thorpe also took two awards. Myles won the award for top rebounder and most steals, while Thorpe won for most assists and top three-points scorer. Cornwall College's Antonio Spence was the top shot blocker.

Gordon, a member of the national squad and reigning all-island MVP also won three awards as she took the awards for most assists and top scorer as well.

William Knibb's Keila Henry was named top rebounder, while her team mate Khoydean Thompson was the top three point shooter. Montego Bay High School's Olivia Beckford had the most steals, while Holland High's Lanasha Smith was the top free throw shooter.
