Headley Vernal cuts a jelly coconut for a customer along Twickenham Park main road.
The 50-year-old vendor has been selling coconuts at the location, close to Registrar General's Department, for the past 20-years — seeing the price of his fruits move from $7.00 in 1993 to $100 today. The truck from which he sells is the seventh he has owned over the period.
"I have been attacked and shot in the past at this same spot, but I am determined that I will not give up," Headley told the Jamaica Observer.
Despite the many challenges, he has been able to support himself and his children, financially.
According to him, it is not what you earn, but what you save from your earnings that makes the difference.
He is appealing to Jamaica's unemployed youth to create jobs for themselves, "instead of sitting and complaining".
