JUTC commends police, Transport Authority for actions against illegal taxis

Monday, August 20, 2012 | 1:05 PM

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is applauding officers from the Police Traffic Division and the Transport Authority for their ongoing efforts to rid public transportation routes in the city of illegal operators.

Many of the routes, including Mountain View to Half-Way-Tree, are overrun by illegal operators who take money away from the JUTC, the state-owned bus company said in a statement.

“It should be recognised that having a safe, reliable and properly-regulated public transportation system is in the best interest of all the relevant stakeholders,” the company said.

“The JUTC anticipates continued co-operation among the company, the police and the Transport Authority in the drive to provide a safe, reliable and efficient public transport system within the KMTR.”

The police intensified operations to clamp down on illegal taxi and bus operators this morning.

The move came on the heels of a crackdown by the Transport Authority last week, as it moved for “greater compliance and discipline” in the sector.
