John Searchwell, the oldest member of the distinguished fraternity of 'Ole Farmers', will be laid to rest today after a thanksgiving service for his life at St Cyprian's Anglican Church, Highgate, St Mary commencing at 11:00 am.

Searchwell, who passed away on March 28 at the age of 96, was a member of the 1939 graduating class of the Jamaica School of Agriculture (JSA). He was a resident of Highgate, St Mary.

The fraternity of 'Ole Farmers' comprises alumnae of the JSA, College of Agriculture, Science and Education and their past students' associations.

'Ole Farmer John', as he was affectionately known, gave yeoman service in the fields of education and agriculture and served as principal of Happy Grove High School. He was president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association during the 1970s and was noted for his fiery campaigns for the rights of teachers.

During the 30-plus years since his retirement from the public service he never stopped working. He was involved in the business of farming and was an active member and treasurer of the St Mary Association of Branch Societies of the JAS, as well as the Show Committee of the St Mary Agro-Expo for several years.
