KINGSTON, Jamaica - About 12,000 customers in the Corporate Area are still without electricity following the passage of Hurricane Sandy a week ago, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says.

The JPS cautioned that while it was working to return electricity to the affected areas, especially eastern parishes, it may be several days yet before power is restored totally.

People who remain without electricity are mainly in eastern parishes - Portland, St Thomas and St Mary- which were hardest hit, the JPS said.

According to JPS many Corporate Area customers who are still without service have had the lines in their communities reenergised. However, smaller lines, which have damaged transformers and blown fuses are causing the continued outage.

The JPS did not say which areas in the Corporate Area were still without power.
