A Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) recruit, Andrew Blair, died yesterday whilst in training at the army's training depot at New Castle in St Andrew.

Blair, 20, of Comfort District, Manchester, was undergoing basic military training when he collapsed.

"He received immediate on-the-spot treatment by the medics based at the training depot and was then evacuated by helicopter to the University Hospital of the West Indies where he was pronounced dead," said a late afternoon statement from the JDF.

Blair commenced his military training on April and was scheduled to graduate on September 21.

Said the army statement: "The passing of Recruit Blair is a sad loss to the JDF but more so to his family and colleagues who knew him well. The JDF shares their grief at his passing and wishes to convey its condolences to his family, colleagues and friends."

In the meanwhile, the JDF said it has commenced a Board of Inquiry into the circumstances of the young man's death.
