4 family members killed in road crash

FOUR members of one family, including a two-year-old boy, died yesterday in a motor vehicle accident along the Old Harbour Main Road in St Catherine. They have been identified as 45-year-old Marie Myrie-Phillips, her son Garina Dixon, 27, his wife Diane Dixon, 32, and their child Nekeil.
The Dixons and their two-year-old child were visiting from Canada. Myrie-Phillips, in the meantime, lived in Willowdene, St Catherine.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), Garina was driving a Toyota Corolla motor car, with the three others aboard, towards Spanish Town when the vehicle collided head-on with an International truck that was travelling in the opposite direction. The accident occurred at the Horizon Park intersection.
"The Toyota Corolla motor car was extensively damaged and its occupants sustained multiple injuries and were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The driver of the motor truck however was not injured," the CCN said.
Family members told the Observer the child had developed breathing complications while at home and was being taken to the Spanish Town Hospital for treatment.
"The father, in a desperate bid to save the child, jumped into his Toyota motor car with his wife and mother and rushed out to reach the hospital, unaware that the trip would be their last," a grieving family member told the Observer after the crash.
One family member said the victims had to be cut from the crumpled vehicle.
The news of the deaths was especially hard for Myrie-Phillips's husband, Gerald, who had reached home just a few minutes after the family left for the hospital.
"Upon reaching home, he saw that his wife left her phone and was rushing to bring the instrument to her when he saw the mangled wreck and later learnt that his family members were victims of the crash," said a family friend, who disclosed that he has since been admitted to hospital after suffering from a nervous breakdown.
Philip Chamberlain, a long-time friend of Garina, said that it was only Tuesday that he assisted a group of people who were involved in an accident.
"He did not know the victims in the accident, but that was just the type of people they were, always loving and caring," said Chamberlain.
Yesterday scores of residents who had gathered at the home of the victims wept openly.
Meantime, the accident resulted in a huge pile-up of traffic along the Old Harbour main road.
The deaths brought to eight the number of persons who had died on the roads during the first four days of the year.

I do believe that the Jamaican government need to get emergency services where in a situation like the one last week the young man wouldn't have to drive his personal car but emergency would be in the home to save the baby and the family would be still alive

I do extend my condolences to the bereaved family and I pray for the girls who are left alive, God see your tears and feel your pain, to those of the family member who is left alive Gods grace to carry you thru

It doesn't surprise me that there are only 6 comments about this awful tragedy. If the story was about homosexuals, this message board would be in overdrive..The people out there should be expending their energy and fightng for better a better qulaity of life..i.e. schools, roads, hospitals, emergency services instead of wasting their energies about what 2 adults do in their bedrooms. If Jamaica had a a decent emergency service, this family might still be alive

Indeed Jamaica need a proper emergency service. This is one of the things that the goernment needs to look into ASAP instead of worring about becoming a republic. So many other things to fix to bring the country into a developed state. As it relates to driving JA needs a better system to hold people accountable in driving. I was there for the holidays and there was just too much reckless driving to count. My condolences to the family. May the Lord comfort you in this difficult.

What a horrible, horrible hurt to deal with at the start of the new year. My condolences to Mr. Gerald Phillips and other family members and loved ones affected by this tragedy. May you find comfort, and the peace that passes all understanding, in the strength of the Lord.

Tragedy!! How much can one family bear. My heart goes out to the family. Words can never, and will never comfort this family. What a tragedy. Could this have been prevented? I guess if we had proper ambulance service in JA, the father probably wouldn't see the need to make that ill fated trip. I saw the news online yesterday at work, and since that time till now i'm saddened and I dont even know the people. May their souls RIP

Hopefully some good can com out of this tragedy. Maybe the new government can focus on providing better emergency medical services, especially ambulances for emergency transport.

I feel your pain, those who are grieving. It's an extremely difficult moment and I don't know what to say but trust God to bring you through this.

I couldn't help it, the tears came streaming down. What a sadness? It is not even as if they were returning from a party, which would be bad enough.
May the remaining family find sustenance in the arms of their comforter, whoever he or she might be and may they Rest in Peace.
