4 guns seized by cops

Monday, February 13, 2012

THE police in various operations seized four firearms and several assorted rounds of ammunition across the island on Saturday.

The Morant Bay Police report that about 7:00 am, an operation was conducted in Bamboo River, St Thomas, during which a building was searched and one Taurus pistol and a magazine containing seven rounds were seized.

One man, whose identity is being withheld, remains in police custody pending further investigations.

Later that day, about 6:30 pm, the Lucea Police reported that a team of officers was conducting a stop-and-search operation on the Hopewell Main Road in Hanover, when the driver of a Toyota motorcar was signalled to stop.

He complied, but the passenger of the motor vehicle alighted and fled. He was subsequently accosted, and a search of the motor vehicle revealed a Ruger semi-automatic pistol with serial number P95BC, loaded with a magazine containing ten 9 mm rounds.

The items were seized and the two men – the driver and his passenger – were taken into custody.

Two hours later, the Caymanas Police conducted an operation at Cottage Drive in Gregory Park, St Catherine, during which a man was accosted and searched, and a Luger 9 mm pistol bearing serial number 31249034, along with a magazine containing eleven 9 mm rounds were taken from him.

He was arrested but his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.

Then, about 10:30 pm, the Mount Salem Police reported that a man was at his home in Chelsea, Irwin district, St James when a gunman gained entry to the premises and demanded money.

A struggle ensued, and the man reportedly managed to relieve the gunman of his firearm. The gunman fled the scene and the man later handed over the weapon – a 9 mm Smith and Wesson pistol, with serial number erased – which contained eight 9 mm cartridges to the Mount Salem Police.
