Photo gallery: Tivoli Gardens roadblocks

By KIMMO MATTHEWS, Observer staff reporter matthewsk@jamaicaobserver.com

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

RESIDENTS of sections of Denham Town and Tivoli Gardens this morning blocked off all roads leading into their communities.

The move comes following reports from Government last night that the papers had been signed to facilitate the process for the extradition of Tivoli Gardens don Christopher 'Dudus’ Coke.

“We are on the look-out,” one resident warned while standing close to one of the blocked roads leading to Denham Town where old cars and other debris have been used as blockades.

Police continue to maintain a presence downtown.

July 2001 28 innocent people died in tivoli gardens, not one gun, not one spent shell was found. What the hell do all these people know the about tivoli gardens and mr. coke. All these crap about evil empire, slavery, he's no different from zeeks, no regular run off the mill criminal(do u know who is dudus, shut the hell up). Now if i'm smart why would i make a comment about something that i don't have a clue about?. Have a brain? Use it!!!.

I am scared for innocent ppl of tivoli, I hope if they capture him, he's not kept at up park camp because I work near there, and I would like to earn my money to take care of me and my family.....I did not go out today to work that is, just like most of my co- workers one day is enough

LOL !IAMAZED ME MOST OF THE READERS HERE LIVES OUTSIDE JAMAICA INCLUDE YOURS TRULY. however I want to agree with most writers here that the Garrison communities should cease to exist, however, as long as poverty exist there will always be communities like this..
Most people living in The USA don't realized that Those communities filled the landscape of the USA up until now...for those living in the States, New aYork...how about Howard Beach?? Little Italy???Benshourst?? sections of Crown Heights? Garden City L.I Sections of Coney Island...
Now this is just a portion of NY..I was there on several of the marches for racial Justice, some of you may be aware of them. Therefore, before we start to condem Jamaica..some even asking for invasion...sic.. look at a history of the USA past and current..I could go on , but I will stop here.

@ Lu Pa - Jamaica is 145 miles long and 50 miles wide; i.e. 234 kilometre x 80 wide. Where did you intend to go? West Kingston is but a tiny area.

@Kweli Simba, Your argument is deep, I agree with you and feels for the decent Jamaicans in TG. Not the enemy within.

On the look out for what? the police? these people need to undertsand that this kind of behavior is the reason why the police will use exessive force to get the job done. I suggest you all just chill and allow the police to access the community for the sake of law and order.

Please remember that the people of Jamaica are law abiding religious people. That includes those in Tovoili that have been for years treated like second class citizens. When the children in other well developed areas are able to go to school those in the poverty areas relies on citizens (each other) to help them.
The level of dedication who looks out for them for years have been so for years. The government needs to treat all citizens fairly regardless of which area one resides. Please stop condemning my people. Unless you have lived in Jamaica you wont understand. We are citizens that had everything taken away from us. Rich in many areas and now battling poverty at it's highest degree. please remember that when the queen asked for slaves to be sent she asked for the biggest and the brightest ones for Jamaica. We are bright people. Demonstrated all over the world and we need to bring our resources back home to rebuild our country and rid itself of violence and poverty.

The situation in Kingston is quite serious for all Jamaicans living at home and abroad. Point being that the government have stuck to the constitution legality in challenging the expedition request, as it would have set a precedent for others to be able to challenge future orders. As citizens, we are all protected... by the the constitution of the land that we live in and any violation of such should be proven in the courts especially when one is being faced with life imprisonment. There are laws and regardless the entity ,the burden of proof should be given and proven. The fact that one says it is so does not mean that it is so unless proven to be so. There is a legal system in Jamaica as in the US and it should be utilized in this case and all others. My only regret was that the PM sought the need to personalize the issue and made it political. A stand that he should have not taken. OUT OF MANY WE ARE ONE PEOPLE . Pray for our Island ans we go through the turmoils.

These people pay no water bill, no light bill, no rent, no taxes, hardley pay for there food as most of the time they go to the macket and pick up your produce and shout SHOWER SHOWER and dat it, TG is a curse to jamaica even the people who live in TG been delt a bad card, as they been social -ize with a free mentality, all the woman do is bleach out there face and the dam man them too, AND BOW TO DUDUS .

Let no one fool themselves about this situation. There are more than likely arm border guards at the state line of Tivoli gardens and the rest of Jamaica. There is only so much blame for Bruce. The former MP fermented this us against them policy and the chickens have come home to roost. Tivoli is a seperate entity from the island of Jamaica. This is clear to the wold at large. Law an order does not apply to them. The sad part abouth this whole situation is the Observer have these pictures up for the world to see what rest of the country is up against. And this is only the begining.
How can any society function like this. we need to go to MARSHALL LAW and hope the security forces can break the back of this monster that is GARRISON politics. All GARRISON. I grew up in a GARRISON and will never recomend that kind of living to my worst enemy. I am glad to say i survived and moved on, but be sure not every one in TG supports whats going on. The conundrum is thay have to fall in

@Kweli Simba; "I have no idea WHY Regular Reader would advocate an American invasion on Jamaica."
Where in my post I advocated an American invasion on Jamaica? Please go re-read my post. I made a statement and it was a comparison. The USA did not invade Panama. They went for the then President and captured him. If they came for an individual that is not invasion. They are removing a individual(s). What is done in Iraq is an invasion. They have taken control of an entire country. America does not want to control Jamaica it just wants (JA) to be rid of the poison. Oh, btw, you state that these people are not criminals. Sure, not all some because they cant do any better continue to live there but the other have done some criminality acts in their time.

What? The idiocity of these people! IT IS ILLEGAL TO DO THAT. THE AUTHORITIES SHOULD SEND IN THE ARMY AND ARREST THEM! THAT IS HOW IT HAS TO BE SO THAT THESE PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT SOMEONE IS IN CHARGE.

The few hijacking the many!!
This just an example of the level of depravity that these politicians have formented with the creation of the garrisons.
Any sociologist could tell you that this kind of behavior is the lowest for of intelligence and they are not open to individual, rational thinking... this is a classic example in conformity and group think studies.
I bet you any money if you ask ten people why the are doing what they are doing, the answer would be such as if it had been rehearsed. And if they are further pressed, you be surprised as to the level of attitudinal conflict that these individuals posses.
The bigger issue here is, how on earth to do reprogram these folks to make the productive members of the society without doing a full on rendition exercise?
Kweli Simba
5/18/2010
I am surprised at the over simplification of the matter at hand. Are you people aware of the history of this community. This has nothing to do with being illiterate...this is the nature of the beast. This is a result of decades of polarisation in the country. Mr. Adams warned of just this situation recently. In addition to that what did you all expect?? A people neglected will find help within themselves. Dudus is not your regular run of the mill criminal.. he has an entire area to boot. He is no different from Zeekes a few years ago. Garrison does what garrison is. I have no idea WHY Regular Reader would advocate an American invasion on Jamaica. Most of the people living in garrisons are not criminals...they are just poor downtrodden Jamaicans looking a food. Please don't patronize them. We should be calling on both parties to form a united front in this matter rather than continue to divide. Portia and Bruce will be in their safe houses what will be the fate of West Kingston???

As the old adage goes "read and write is not common sense" but guess what, for most of those people in TG common sense is not common. Instead of trying to rid the community of the so call war lords they themselves are the one protecting them.
I wonder if they even for a sec. realize that they are nothing but slaves to these lords. the lickie lickie people them who don't want to work and support dam families. Jamaica will not be better until we get rid of them all. All who cant' hear shall certainly feel. I have to laugh at the stupidity of the people.

We shall hear them calling the police when them start killing each other in there.
Only the Good Lord can help us.

Do they even know what they are doing to themselves? they are very strong when it comes to the government and authorities, they never use such power against the gunmen when are come to murder their babies and rape their kids.
They need to educate and free themselves from salvery.

Yes, to properly cure a sore foot you have to cut out the infected flesh.
Yes it will hurt but the leg will heal. The body will get better.
Like any sore foot, the longer you wait to get it treated, the more infection spreads and the more flesh you will have to cut out.

This should kind of give you a glimpse into the mindset and culture of that place and like places. The residents don't see that place as a seamless part of the country of Jamaica, they see it more like a Caribbean country (state) in CARICOM. The Don is the leader, and the politician the puppet. They are essentially paralysed by fear, simple-mindedness, and hopelessness. It is them vs. Jamaica. It has to stop though, because as was said years back in the media when Golding took it on as his constuency - if these conditions are sustained, then stable governance in Jamaica will not be sustained. The nurturing of stable government and garisson communities are mutually exclusive with time. It MUST stop, and now is as good a time as any to stop it.

There has to be something more important going on in Jamaica these days. Why is this Thug getting so much attention. The reason why this Dudus fool is creating so much publicity and attention is because he is a criminal and has something to do with drugs and guns (Jamaicas Specialty) .If you look at what he is being charged with, people from nations such as Honduras or Colombia and all other drugs lords across South America are Extradited to the United States on a daily basis, I choose to glorify Jamaicans such as Usain Bolt or Marcus Garvey or Barrington Irving, not a man with the last name Coke.

Lock them in and set up a road block and surround the area armed by the JDF and as they come out for food, lock them up until the area is secured, searched, every individual is finger printed and retina scanned to validate identity. Clean the rot out, bring the war to the gunmen force them to play their hand then take them out.

Why do we blame the Police for not protecting us? Dudus did not block these roads, 'Law abiding citizens' did. that road is very essential to the lively hood of KGN. WHY IS THE ROAD STILL BLOCKED, the Army is not full of lazy men and women. The state must put an end to the way they deal with brazen defiant citizens. Bruse, this is your constituency, do something about this.

Yes, this is what I am expecting Thank you Bruce Bangarang Golding. Your speech last night was just hot air. This is YOUR garrison constituency..
But let me forewarn you Bruce the Jamaica Justice System might not be able to prosecute you but be warned, Panama is a much bigger country than Jamaica and USA got Noriega so, remember your days are numbered. You are an evil man, you put they people on guard ahead of your speech and now they are continuing to disrupt law abiding citizens life.
The love of POWER WILL be your downfall.
