A man was shot dead by a licensed firearm holder on Bevin Avenue in Montego Bay, St James yesterday morning.

The man, believed to have been in his 20s, and who is yet to be identified, was of dark complexion, slim build and about 152 centimetres (5 feet) tall.

Reports from the Barnett Street Police are that about 6:25 am, the licensed firearm holder was making purchases at a shop when an armed man attacked him and attempted to rob him. He reportedly resisted and subsequently shot his attacker.

The police were summoned and upon their arrival the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A 9 mm pistol and a magazine loaded with two 9 mm cartridges were taken from the alleged robber.

The firearm holder’s weapon has since been seized for ballistic testing and his hands swabbed.

Detectives from the Montego Bay Criminal Investigation Branch are investigating.
