Arscott orders probe into illegal garbage dumping
Saturday, February 25, 2012
LOCAL Government Minister Noel Arscott has called for an investigation into what he said is the illegal dumping of solid waste across the island.
The probe is to be carried out by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), who will be working alongside the Public Health Department and the National Environment Planning Agency. The findings are expected within 30 days.
"It has been brought to my attention that illegal dumping continues to take place within the vicinity of the Riverton disposal site."
"I have since referred this matter to the NSWMA's moard instructing that an investigation be carried out and the findings reported to me as to the measures to be taken to cauterise the situation," Arscott said in a statement yesterday, noting that the investigation should not be limited to the Riverton dump.
Section 23 of the National Solid Waste Management Act stipulates that a licence is required for persons who operate or propose to operate waste disposal sites, provide or propose to provide waste collection or transfer, or otherwise manage solid waste.
Offenders face fines of up to $1 million dollars or a prison term of up to nine months, or both fine and imprisonment.
Yesterday, Ascott said that he had "requested that the board act within the confines of the law, utilising the provisions under the National Solid Waste Management Act in prosecuting offenders".
