Back to school after the violence

Some remain closed

BY KIMMO MATTHEWS Observer staff reporter matthewsk@jamaicaobserver.com

Monday, May 31, 2010

SEVERAL schools in sections of the Corporate Area this morning opening their doors to resume classes a week after civil unrest caused a virtual lock down in the region.

For three days last week gunmen loyal to Christopher 'Dudus' Coke were locked in a deadly gun battle with members of the security forces forcing some schools to halt their operation.

"Today some schools have began to open their doors but there are others like Tivoli Gardens High that remain closed," police still monitoring downtown Kingston told the Observer this morning.

Tivoli High School, Denham Town High School and their adjoining Primary, All Age, Junior High, Infant and Basic Schools remain closed until further notice.

The Ministry of Education is advising parents to use their discretion to determine whether it is safe for their children to attend school following the recent violence.

The Ministry recommends that parents of students who live in affected areas consider carefully, on a day-by-day basis, whether or not the risk level is low enough for their children to travel safely to and from school.

Examination arrangements for schools in Kingston and St Andrew for today are as follows:

The schools below will sit examinations at the Overseas Examinations Commission.

• Kingston Technical High School

• St Andrew Technical High School

• Charlie Smith High School

• Trench Town High School

Tivoli High School Students will go to St Hugh’s High School. Denham Town and Kingston High will go to Wolmer’s Boys’ and Girls’ School.

St George’s College, Kingston College, Excelsior, Vauxhall and Camperdown High Schools and Exed Community College will remain at their campuses for the examinations.

Parents or children in need of counselling following the violence can call the ministry's helpline: 1-888-KARE
