Bail extended for accused thieving cop

A suspended police constable and a car salesman, who were implicated in an alleged car stealing ring last October, on Friday had their bails extended for them to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on March 1.

Constable Miguel Pine, who was assigned to the Motorised Patrol Division, is charged along with Andre Luton.

Pine is charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and two counts of conspiracy to defraud while Luton is charged with two counts of simple larceny, three counts of receiving stolen property and two counts of conspiracy to defraud.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams scheduled the matter for plea and case management hearing when the two accused appeared in court.

Pine was arrested on October 20, 2010 following a ruling by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions while Luton was arrested shortly after he turned himself in following calls from the police.

In late August of last year, detectives from Organised Crime Investigation Division started an investigation in what later turned out to be a major stolen motor vehicle syndicate after a member of the public reported that his motor vehicle was stolen.

The court was previously informed that Pine reportedly sold stolen cars to unsuspecting buyers, who included other members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Four cars were recovered.
