A press team from Brazil is to visit Jamaica from August 22 to 26 to look at tourism products and attractions and help build awareness about the Jamaica Brand in that country.
The trip is a joint effort by the Jamaican embassy in Brazil and the Jamaica Brazil Chamber of Commerce and Industry with full sponsorship from COPA airlines and the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB).
The Jamaican Ambassador in Brazil, Alison Stone Roofe, disclosed that the trip is part of activities to be rolled out by the Chamber over the next year and a half to promote tourism, trade and investment between Jamaica and Brazil.
"The first order of the day though, is to build the knowledge of the Jamaican market in Brazil and that's what we hope to do with this press trip with about eight journalists coming down to see for themselves what Jamaica has to offer," she said.
Stone Roofe said that Jamaica and Brazil continue to enjoy a strong diplomatic relationship, which has deepened since the establishment of the Jamaican Embassy in that country last year.
The two states have had diplomatic contact for some 51 years, since Jamaica gained independence in 1962.
The ambassador stated that the opening of the embassy was part of a strategic move geared towards encouraging trade and investment between Jamaica and Brazil.
"There are several aspects of targeted actions that we have in our strategic plan or strategic vision for the embassy being here (Brazil), and that includes trade and investment, culture, defence co-operation, work on an air services agreement, and deepening our technical co-operation activities with Brazil, which cover a range of issues," she said.
Additionally, Stone Roofe said that the embassy is looking at other areas of co-operation in the fields of agriculture, tourism, health and security. "There is a whole package of activities that we have in place and which we have envisaged to look at over the next two to three years," she added.
Stone Roofe, who is Jamaica's first resident ambassador to Brazil, said since taking up office, she has met with representatives from a number of groups, including the private sector, the industry association and the Sao Paulo tourism group -- the key travel agent that sends tourists to Jamaica.
"There has been quite a lot of activity, but clearly we're building relations now, being on the ground in a more active way. So, there is a lot of work to be done. There is a small staff, but we are trying to do what we can and within specific timelines, so that we deliver on the plan that we have before us," she said in the telephone interview from Brazil.
