SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — A British national, vacationing at Calabash Bay in Treasure Beach with his family, drowned Thursday morning, police have confirmed.

He has been identified as Anthony James Wilkinson, 49, a social worker of London, England.

Police say Wilkinson who was holidaying with his wife and two sons, aged six and four, was walking on the beach with the four year-old when the latter went into the sea.

Reports say Wilkinson rushed into the water when he realised his son was in trouble and held on to the child.

However, he himself got into difficulties — sucked in by strong under currents. Hearing his cries for help, his wife also ran into the water and was able to take the child from his arms.

She, too, struggled to escape the water but was saved by others. Reports are that those rescuers also got into difficulties but were able to pull Wilkinson from the water. However, they were unable to resuscitate him.
