ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – Sitting member of Parliament for St Elizabeth South West constituency Hugh Buchanan a short while ago won the internal contest for leadership of the People's National Party (PNP) constituency.
Buchanan got 147 votes to challenger Ewan Stephenson's 133 votes.
Some 346 delegates were registered to vote but only 281 delegates voted at the Black River Primary School in St Elizabeth, today. One of the ballots was reportedly spoilt.
The winner of the contest will be expected to represent the PNP in the parliamentary election, which is constitutionally due late next year, but which many analysts believe will be held soon.
