MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A busload of passengers narrowly missed serious injury when a bus in which they were travelling developed mechanical problems and caught fire along the Winston Jones Highway near Mandeville this morning.

Quick action by the driver and conductor, however, brought the problem under control.

"A drive me a drive when me see smoke a come up in the vehicle and hear someone bawl out say fire," said one passenger who identified herself as 'Sandra'.

According to the bus driver ‘binding‘ of the brakes caused the fire.

"Because the brake was rubbing it got hot and the tyre caught fire," said the driver who rushed extinguished the flame with a fire extinguisher.

Passengers assisted by using dirt to smother the flames.
