Cabinet mum on retreat

Monday, February 06, 2012

CABINET spent the past four days in a retreat plotting Jamaicans’ economic future and looking at ways of tackling the social challenges facing the nation.

But journalists will have to wait until Wednesday to hear the results of the deliberations, which included presentations from the financial secretary and his team; the Bank of Jamaica Governor as well as a team from the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).

A news release last night from Jamaica House reiterated that “among the issues examined over the four-day period were: the state of the country's economy, the social challenges and how to chart the way forward, the prospects for a new International Monetary Fund agreement, a preliminary examination of the programmes and spending priorities for the fiscal year beginning April 2012, growth strategies and job creation were also examined.

On Wednesday, Minister of Finance and Planning Dr Peter Phillips, will brief members of the media on the state of Jamaica's economy and plans for the remainder of the financial year at Jamaica House, the release said.

Seems like the country is on auto pilot; was there a plan of how to manage and run the affairs of the country ?. Was it; all about gaining power & nothing else?. Those who fail to PLAN; plan to FAIL. What became of the PNP’s manifesto ?. I could have sworn; that they had a manifesto prior to the election. Was it a smoke screen or just another empty election promise ?. Is it that; a plan is just been formulated now; for how the country will be govern ?. Is this good for business confidence ?.

It is beginning to appear that this government will be mum on a number of things for a long time to come. Prior to the election, I said that the government should provide details about JEEP, for example. Obviously, there was nothing planned, apart from the acronym! You would have thought this government would have hit the ground running, with all the misgivings people have (as indicated by the low voter turnout). Luk lakka sey dem win di elections but no kno wha fi do now.

What a lot of meetings and audits and no action, plan or call to arms so far. Just look at today's observer with a bevy of 5 beauties touring Sangster airport with a view to improving flow. Which one of the 5 is the industrial engineer? Too much posturing. Where is the action, we already see nuff bag a mouth.

Same thing happened in 1989 too ..... the first year was taken up in Cabinet talk shops and then the next several years of focus at Jampro et al were taken up with non starter meetings allegedly planning things like the National Industrial Plan which was then promptly ignored .... then along came Omar and the major crash started ..... our memories are way too short .... we are way too gullible in assigning our votes .....
