Fissure sealant was yesterday applied to the teeth of hundreds of children across the island, free of cost, by members of the Jamaica Dental Association in observance of World Oral Health Day.

The gesture was made in support of the National Sealant Programme announced by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton at the association’s National Dental Convention in February.

A fissure sealant is a protective coating applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth to keep out bacteria and prevent tooth decay.

Children in primary schools and children’s homes were the main beneficiaries

World Oral Health Day is observed globally every year, on March 20, to highlight the importance of oral health for a healthy body. Member associations and partners of the International Dental Federation across the world join in organising activities, such as public talks, runs and screenings in an attempt to make a positive difference for oral health on that day.
