Close schools and send home workers affected by smoke — ODPEM
Jamaica Observer
Friday, February 10, 2012
THE Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising that all schools located close to the fire at Riverton City Landfill should close with immediate effect.
Schools will reopen on Monday February 13, 2012.
In a release this morning ODPEM also advised businesses located along Ferry, Spanish Town Road and in the immediate vicinity of the Riverton City Landfill to send staff members home who are suffering or are likely to suffer from respiratory ailments as a result of the fire at the Riverton City Landfill.
The Office also sent out health tips for persons affected by the smoke:
Avoid or reduce exposure to smoke by closing window and doors and remain indoors as much as possible. This is especially so for those persons who suffer from allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions; and elderly and young;
Cover nose and mouth with a clean wet rag or cloth to minimize effects of the smoke;
Avoid exposing laundry outdoors since these can become contaminated, stained and foul smelling;
Visit the nearest health facility or doctor if they start having shortness of breath, wheezing or severe coughing, especially those with respiratory illnesses;
