Contractor General warns Bartlett about airlift agreement denial

JamaicaObserver.com

Friday, June 11, 2010

CONTRACTOR General Greg Christie today issued a stern warning to Tourism Minister, Ed Bartlett and permanent secretary in the ministry Jennifer Griffiths about their alleged denial of representations made by them to his office.

Yesterday Christie revealed that the deal had breached state procurement guidelines and was approved by Cabinet after it was operational.

In a release to the media Christie warned that his office will be taking steps to determine if false or misleading representations were made by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, permanent secretary Jennifer Griffith and Jamaica Vacations Executive Director, Lionel Reid when they met with representatives of his office in April.

The meeting was held at the request of Prime Minister Bruce Golding to brief the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) on two US Airways airlift agreements which had been entered into by the Government.

“In the circumstances, the OCG feels  obliged  to caution Minister Bartlett and Permanent Secretary Griffith to be circumspect in their future public utterances on the issue and to ensure that nothing is said which could be interpreted as challenging the veracity of the OCG’s report on the representations which they themselves have volunteered to the OCG,” the release said.

Christie pointed to a letter penned by Griffith as proof of irregularities in the deal.

"The flight series started on April 15, 2010 although approval has not yet been received from Cabinet and the contract is not yet signed by JamVac," the letter, which was forwarded to the media, stated.

Christie also warned that Bartlett's and Griffith's denials may be in breach of law.

"Section 29 (a) of the Contractor General Act provides that every person who willfully makes any false statement to mislead, or misleads, or attempts to mislead a Contractor General shall be guilty of a criminal offense," the release stated.

For heaven's sake Dwight Pringle, don't try dragging down this man's name in the mud. He is squeakiy clean That is the problem with people like you, you can't believe that anyone is honest. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BRING HIM DOWN TO YOUR LEVEL. YOU JUST CAN'T DO IT.
Mr. Christie can only bring these matters to the attention of the DPP and you know what happens when they get there. Mr. Christie doesn't want anybody's job. He just want to do what he is doing to the best of his ability

Mr. Christie, It seems your party officials are trying to catch up on all the years of corruptions they missed out on. I know it is not easy to shine the light on your own corrupt party officials but I commend you for your honesty and integrity. It can cost you your job and career if you ruffle the wrong feathers. However, honesty is still a good policy. You have the blessing of the Jamaican people. No retreat no surrender help is coming in 2 1/2 years.

THis Christie guy is getting on my last nerve. Its obvious the government are breaking the rules, however until he gets a prosecution and sanction one gets teh impression he is just trying ton keep his name in teh news. His job is to create an awareness and start the process of real punishment, not merely try to embarass people who have no shame.
My conclusion is it seems as if he is angling for some bigger position. DPP watch your back.

A whe dis ya man cum from? Seriously speaking, couldn't we clone him? This man is as straight as an arrow. I remember when the PNP was in power he was the JLP's hero. Now the same people are saying "him too fass."
I know the man. He can't be bought. Remember he is pushing this case against Dr. Davis too.
Mr. Bartlett was warned before, but he is a law onto himself. He should be prosecuted and if found guilty sent to prison. We need to make examples of these people.

According to the PS and the Minister, the contract that was finally signed off by Cabinet has a commencement date of June 1 and the GOJ has no financial obligation t9o USAirways for the period between the end of the 1st contract (in April) and that date.
Is this true? The commencement date should be right at the front of the contract. Has a copy of the signed contract arrived at the OCG?

What you guys need to realize is Mr. Christie has zero power to charge anyone. He can forward his findings to the DPP for further actions, but he has no power to haul anyone before the courts. Please do your research on what occur with the JLP MP, Mr. Hibbert and the decision the DPP took on that matter.
