Cop on gun charge

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Leon Coward, a district constable found last month with a gun that was stolen from the Gordon Town Police Station where he was assigned, has been granted bail.

The 40-year-old Coward was offered $200,000 bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court this week following a bail application by his attorney Chris Tavares-Finson.

A colleague allegedly took the gun from Coward’s waistband when he went to turn in his Jamaica Constabulary Force-issued firearm.

The weapon is said to have been an exhibit in a case before the courts, when it was stolen from the station.

During the bail application Tavares-Finson told the court that his client, who has been a district constable for the past six years, is a responsible persons and that he had never been in trouble with the law up to this point.

Coward is to return to court on October 19.
