Cops hold alleged robbers after street drama in city
THERE was high drama in Kingston yesterday as police chased alleged robbers travelling in a Daewoo motor car through the streets of the Jamaican capital, ending with the arrest of three men and the seizure of a 9mm gun and 10 rounds of ammunition.
"Police, about midday, received reports that four men aboard a red Daewoo motor vehicle held up and robbed a man in Vineyard Town," Superintendent Arthur Brown told the Observer.
The drama, however, begun to unfold when officers assigned to Superintendent Brown's East Kingston Division spotted the vehicle fitting the description along Mountain View Avenue in the eastern end of the city.
The police said that the patrol car, which began to chase the Daewoo, was fired at but the police continued the chase through the streets of the city as the driver went through red lights, broke stops signs and forced other motorists off the road with the police in hot pursuit with their flashing blue lights and sirens.
By this time officers from Half-Way-Tree had joined their colleagues as the Daewoo driver turned down Swallowfield, then onto South Avenue but crashed into a median as he ran into a dead end as the road had been blocked off for several months. He immediately abandoned the Korean-made vehicle, leaving his three alleged cronies to face the music. The police immediately took the three into custody and after a search of the motor car they allegedly found the firearm with 10
Several persons ran to the scene, some saying they were shocked when they heard the crashing sound.
"I was walking along the roadway and saw the red car come around the corner at high speed with the police chasing and that was when I heard the collision," said a woman who was in the Swallowfield area at the time.
