We are Jamaicans... Not PNP or JLP

Member of Parliament for St Andrew southern, Omar Davies

Sunday, March 21, 2010

WHETHER you voted or not, your member of parliament is there to serve you. Once you live in the constituency, the MP is your political representative and you have the right to make certain demands of him/her. Although, quite arguably, some people expect too much from their MPs, in the Jamaican context their roles are unclear -- particularly since they have no known job descriptions. Over the next few months, the Sunday Observer will be visiting all 60 constituencies and asking Jamaicans to rate their MPs in our "We are Jamaicans" series.

Dear Mr Davies

After lengthy discussions with the people in your constituency, the following four issues emerged as the most pressing:

1) Water shortage in the constituency is forcing at least one school to close for days at a time and causing others to dismiss classes prematurely.

2) For the most part, the communities are overflowing with unemployed people.

3) The decrepit housing stock in some communities like Rose Town and Jungle need to be modernised.

4) Constituents are clamouring for a stronger presence from you in their communities, and for you to be impartial and unbiased in your dealings with them.

Sincerely,

Kimone Thompson

Rate Your MP

9/10

EUGENE WISDOM, RETIRED, CRAIG TOWN

Him open the community centre so those who can't read, can read. We all know tings bad so we not trying to kill him.

0/10

NATALIE LEVY, UNEMPLOYED, REMA

The only time wi see him come in necktie and long sleeve shirt is election time. The MP come in the community and look out for him own people. Him don't come ah look out for everybody.

10/10

MARK BRYAN, CARPENTER, ARNETT GARDENS

Omar help a whole lot of kids re education. If they pass GSAT or CXC and the parents can't afford it, him go find the money and help them. I respect him for that. The next thing him do is sponsor the football and netball club in the Corner League competition.

7/10

DR HENLEY MORGAN, ENTREPRENEUR, TRENCH TOWN

The MP has been good and he has been bad. To my mind, he has brought a non-partisan and non-violent approach which, in itself, is a major shift from what these communities are used to and the most evidence of this can be seen in the Tony Spaulding football field. In terms of the CDF, there has been an emphasis on education. On the down side, there is dissatisfaction in some segments which claim he doesn't divide his time equally in the constituency.

0/10

SANDRA WALKER, SHOPKEEPER, ROSE TOWN

Him not doing anything around here.

5/10

DOREEN RAYMOND, TORRINGTON PARK

Some kids who pass the CXC exams in St Andrew South get money to buy uniforms and books etc. That always happen. Him even give them a trip to the north coast.

They should be required to live in the area they represent. Thats the only way you will see infrastructure development and the partsan crime problem go away .Surely the M.P. dont want his frends saying " then a yaaso yu live ?".
