Despite efforts, counterfeit cigarettes still an issue — Carreras
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Local cigarette distributor Carreras Limited has raised additional concerns about the influx of counterfeit cigarettes that are still making their way through Jamaican ports.
The organisation, in an advisory Monday, recognised the efforts of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Customs Agency, which it said have been effective in stemming many of the illicit trade channels.
“However, there are points where these products continue to enter through our ports without detection and, therefore, highlight the need for additional enforcement from the relevant authorities,” it added.
Carreras said it will address the matter at a press conference on Wednesday, and also disclose the impact of the illicit infiltration on the economy.
