THE St Andrew-based Dunrobin Primary School used its morning devotion Tuesday to kick-start celebrations marking its 40th year in existence.
The event, which was attended by the school's nearly 1,400 students, as well as its staff, scores of parents and past students, marked the beginning of what will be a year-long celebration.
Chairman of the school board, Edward Nugent congratulated the school's administrators for continuing to uphold the rich heritage of the school in providing stellar education to the student. He encouraged them to "press along" despite the challenges posed by the harsh economic conditions.
Dunrobin was one of the best performing schools in the 2010 Grade Six Achievement test with many of its placed at prominent high schools, including Campion College, Ardenne High, Merl Grove and St Andrew High.
Principal Robert Gillies was pleased at Tuesday's turnout, particularly the past students and parents. He urged them to take part in the other celebratory activities.
Also sharing in the occasion was former principal, Pauline Fraser, who officially opened a computer and learning centre that was named in her honour.
"I am so happy to be here this morning, because I can remember 40 years ago when we first opened the door of Dunrobin Primary School there were seven teachers and I was one of them," she said in reflection.
When the school opened in 1970, it could only accommodate 375 students, she said but since that time the school has developed and has excelled in various activities.
Another former teacher, Ivet Wright, also shared memories of her years at Dunrobin.
"What started out as a pilot project quickly became one of Jamaica's prominent primary school. If you want your child to do well, send him to Dunrobin Primary," she said.
In addition, Wright said that the students not only excelled academically, outclassing top rated preparatory schools, but also did well in singing and dancing competitions and sports, among other activities.
Pastor Herro Blair Jr, a past student, also congratulated the school on its 40th anniversary, while encouraging its supporters to give thanks for the school's many successes.
Other activities planned are a church service at the Rehoboth Gospel Assembly on Constant Spring Road in Kingston on September 26, a barbecue, an open day and the launch of the Dunrobin Past Student's Association.
