GENERAL manager of the Jamaica National Building Society Earl Jarrett has been appointed commissioner of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica. His appointment took effect yesterday.
Jarrett filled the vacancy left by Professor Errol Miller, who resigned on December 31, after 12 years at the helm of the commission.
Yesterday, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, who made the appointment, praised Miller for "12 years of distinguished service, dedication and commitment to the Electoral Commission and to the people of Jamaica" and wished "Jarrett well as he commits himself to another phase of service to the nation".
Established in 2006, the Electoral Commission of Jamaica is a permanent independent and autonomous authority which reports to Parliament. It replaced the Electoral Advisory Commission, which had been in existence since 1979.
