Education ministry assessing school damage

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Officials from the Ministry of Education have been touring schools today to assess the damage done by Hurricane Sandy.

"So far we have visited three schools and the damage observed is being assessed," Minister Ronald Thwaites told the Observer just after noon today.

He was at Donald Quarrie High School in Harbour View, St Andrew where four classrooms were damaged after the sea surged more than 50 feet inland and flooded a section of the school.

The minister said following the tours, the ministry would decide when to reopen schools.
