86,000 electors to be notified of constituency changes

Thursday, November 03, 2011

APPROXIMATELY 86,000 electors across four parishes are to receive individual notification cards form the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) detailing the changes to their constituencies as a result of the recent 'boundaries realignment exercise'.

The realignment means that these electors in the parishes of St Andrew, St Ann, St James, and St Catherine now reside and will subsequently vote in new constituencies.

As a means of public education, the ECJ will be issuing individual notifications over the coming weeks to each elector whose constituency has been changed by the realignment.

The notification cards will outline the name of their new constituency, polling division number, as well as the address and contact information for the returning officer in the constituency.

With the Gazetting of the Constituency (Boundaries) Order 2011, three new constituencies have been created, bringing the total number of constituencies in Jamaica to 63.

Two constituencies have been added to the parish of St Catherine and one to the parish of St James.

The three new constituencies are St Catherine South Central, St Catherine East Central and St James Central.

The new constituencies will become operational in the next general elections.

The existing constituency originally known as St Catherine South Central has been renamed St Catherine Eastern. Likewise, the constituency formerly known as St Catherine East Central has been renamed St Catherine North Central.

Persons in these constituencies who require additional information may contact the ECJ toll free at 1-888-991-VOTE (8683) or email eojinfo@eoj.com.jm
